Shoulders or bust are larger than your hips.

  • The most athletic looking silhouette

  • A slim lower body, with weight carried around middle, bust and arms

  • Broad shoulders that are noticeably wider than your hips — shoulders are wider than the hips by at least 5% in measurement

  • Little definition between waist and hips

Celebrities:

Many models, Naomi Campbell, Renée Zellweger, Miley Cyrus, Cindy Crawford, Teri Hatcher, Gisele Bundchen, Claudia Schiffer, Zendaya, Rebel Wilson, Amanda Seyfried, Charlie XCX, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Greene

Goal:

Highlight the legs.

  • Soften the shoulder line and add more volume/width around your hips and thighs to balance out your silhouette.

  • Create curves around your hips and thighs with flouncy details such as ruffles, tiers and pleats, flared bottom hems like wide and flare leg jeans/pants.

  • Define waist with waist-defining tops, dresses, sweater and jackets, and belted styles.

  • You can pull off straight and sharp clothing.

Dresses:

Short dresses, dresses with streamlined/straight lines, boxy shifts, tunic dresses, one-shoulder dresses, A-lines are great. Voluminous or tiered skirts. You can get away with detailing especially below the waist — like pleats or patterns.

Gowns:

The mermaid and elegant, one-shoulder styles.

Tops:

Tops and sweaters to make waist look smaller and defined. Tops with soft shoulders. Draped fabrics. Dark or bright color tops, kimono shirt, waterfall shirt, tops with soft sleeves, one-shoulder tops, wide straps, collarless shirts, low V-necks, scoop necklines, drapey slip-off-the-shoulder tops. Tunics that fall over the hips to add width.

Toppers:

Fitted jackets with a nipped-in waist and a flare bottom. Straight lines work. Lower pockets are good, as well as vents in the back. Dark color jackets. Coats with angular lines (but go easy on the collar!). Soft and drapey wrap cardigans.

Skirts:

Peplum skirt, tulip skirt, A-line skirt, full circle skirt, bias cut skirt, maxi skirts. Straight cut is okay. You can handle tiered, volume, dropped waistlines, and details such as panels, box pleats or vertical lines at the top ending in a full skirt. You can pull off fuller or shorter skirts, or skirts with prints.

Pants & jeans:

Any style that will accentuate your bottom and leg line and bring focus there such as pockets, embellished back pockets, pattern and print, baggy trousers, combat, cargo pants, gauchos and harem pants, palazzo, flares, culottes, wide-legs, cuffed jeans. Leg details such as details or color contrast at the hemline. Trousers with front pleats. Pants/jeans in light or bright color, or prints. Straight leg, bootcut, flare, wide leg jeans/pants. A high-waist wide-leg pant can look great and show off a slimmer middle section. Tights in a pattern, color, or thick wool.

Shoes:

Eye-catching shoes with color or details to draw eye downward. Chunky heeled shoes, platforms, wedges, ankle boots, cowboy boots, slouchy knee boots, ankle-strap shoes. Light-colored shoes. Major color contrasts such as dark boots, bare legs and a skirt, for example.

Handbags:

Chunky, colored, fussy or detailed shoulder bags and longer bags which sit on your hip or thighs.

Accessories:

Piles of bracelets and cuffs. Long necklace to create vertical lines. Create the illusion of a waist with details such as a wide belt.

Hair:

You are “top-heavy” so you don’t want your hair to be too voluminous or too flat. Balance your body shape with medium volume or a messy layered look with layers starting at the jawline. You can wear wavy hair to soften muscular shoulders. Think longer wavy styles like those of Eva Longoria and Gisele Bundchen. If you have great shoulders, neck and collar bones, try shorter hair to show it off, like a chin length bob! Stay away from a strong bang.

Active clothes:

Show off your great shapely shoulders with a cap-sleeve top that is loose through the tummy and has a longer cut to cover your bum. Wear slim fitting pants with a smooth waistband.

Careful:

Vertical details on bottoms which will only make your lower half look slimmer. Thick knitwear tops which add bulk to your shoulders. Shoulder pads, puffy shoulders, and other strong shoulder details. Skinny pants/jeans need to be balanced with a top that minimizes shoulders and shoes that add volume. Frills and flounces don’t work as well on you. Wide necklaces or wide necklines (like boat or off-the-shoulder) or spaghetti-strap tops will only make the shoulder line look wider.
