Shoulders and hips are around the same size, with an undefined waistline that may be wider. 🍏

  • Hips and shoulders with the same width

  • Waistline has the same width or is wider

  • Hips are about 6 inches smaller than your chest

  • A small bottom and gain weight around your torso and arms

  • Shapely legs

What to wear for an Apple-shaped figure:

Keep the focus on your shoulders and down your legs, instead of the tummy region! Draw the eye up with V necks or scoop necks, open collars, and drop earrings. Highlight your bottom half with patterned or lighter colored pants, skinny jeans, jeans with rips, or anything else that catches the eye. And don’t size up your tops—excess fabric will make you look bigger than you are!

Celebrities:

Jennifer Hudson, Catherine Zeta Jones, Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey, Melanie Griffith, Drew Barrymore, Blake Lively, Queen Latifah, Kate Upton, Jessica Simpson, Adele, Michelle Obama, Melissa McCarthy

Goal:

Highlight the shoulders and legs, and minimize the midsection.

  • Wear clothes that make your midsection appear narrower and create the illusion of a waist.

  • Add interest to your shoulders and neckline (above the bustline), and add volume/detail to your hips (below the bustline).

  • No detail through the waist, and darker colors and monochromatic color schemes slim your middle.

  • Do not cover your body because of your belly. Exposing yourself in sleek silhouettes gives you a modernized appearance.

  • Show off those nice, shapely legs.

Dresses:

Shift dresses, trapeze dresses, empire dresses, A-line dresses. Sheath dress in a firm fabric. Drop waist dresses. Look for dress silhouettes that have a full shape on the bottom. Dresses that create the illusion of a waist. Dresses that nip right below your bust and skim over your midsection, like an empire dress or a simple wrap dress. Eye-catching detailing at the neckline or shoulders. Short dresses to show off your legs!

Gowns:

Empire waist with subtle A-line out to floor.

Tops:

Tops that nip right below your bust and skim over your midsection. Flowy/floaty tops, swing tops, form-fitting tops in stiff fabrics. Longer tops, tops with draping fabric, tops with sleeve details such as slits and gathers, tops with neckline details, low or wide V-necks, scoop necks, square neck, sweetheart. Bloused tops are flattering, including blousy bat-wing tops which hides heavy arms or love handles. Drop waist tops. Shoulder pads.

Toppers:

Swing coats. Single-breasted structured and tailored or soft jackets. Nipped waist jackets. Single button jackets with button ideally placed under your bust and above your tummy. Longer-length, lean jackets that sit just below the hip bone or longer, worn open to create vertical lines. A long, tailored vest worn open is good on you. Belted trench coat with epaulets. Single-breasted coats, A-line coats, cardigan style coats, and those with a deep V-neck won’t add bulk to your frame. Shoulder pads. Drape/waterfall cardigans.

Skirts:

High-waisted circle skirt (sits at the smallest part of the torso and flares out over the stomach). Structured pencil skirt, straight, bias cut, asymmetric, A-line, flared, knee-length skirts, prints. Box pleats are good starting at a point below your tummy, with a side fastening and flat front. Short skirts to show off your legs!

Pants & jeans:

Lower-waisted straight-leg pants (helps avoid stomach bulge). Trouser jeans. Flat-fronted pants/jeans, flare, wide-leg and bootcut. High rise and dark colors. No detailing at the waistband. Skinny and boot-leg cuts. Slim pants worn with an untucked long top and a short fitted jacket—the trio hides the tummy while playing up the legs, with cool proportions. Pants with back pockets can give the illusion of having more of a backside.

Shoes:

Heeled shoes with color or eye-catching details. Chunky heels create balance. Have fun with shoes!

Handbags:

Have fun with handbags. Longer strap bags are better than shoulder bags. Keep size medium to chunky.

Accessories:

Dark-colored belts worn at the smallest part of the waist—for apples, this is usually just above the natural waist. Statement jewelry of all kinds. Scarves worn to create long vertical lines with vertical draping.

Undergarments:

A good bra that lifts your bust, making your waist look slimmer.

Hair:

Go with either some volume OR some length. Too much of both volume and length in your hair would over shadow your sculpted shoulders and arms, add too much visual weight to the top part of you. Balance is key—go with a shorter, voluminous hairstyle (think Oprah’s curly lobs), or a longer, softly waved style (think Angelina Jolie’s longer wavy styles). The goal is to keep attention on your face, shoulders and décolletage, and away from the tummy.

Active clothes:

Wear a loose, slightly longer top that ties or cinches at the bottom or sides, with will define your middle and conceal your tummy. Or try tops that are loosely fitted or draped around the torso. A V-neck will accentuate your bust beautifully. Wider strapped style tanks are better than thin straps unless your shoulders are toned. To best flatter your toned legs wear fitted capris, tights, or shorts—you can try them in a color or print! Don’t wear flared bottoms because they’ll throw off your proportions by adding bulk. Don’t wear tight tops.

Careful:

Bulky and chunky fabrics. Crop tops: you need tops that extend just below your hipbone to draw attention away from your midriff. High neck tops make your top look bigger. Avoid tucking in tops because this can draw attention to a wider waist and also make you appear shorter! Avoid large patterns on top because they bring too much attention—wear a small, subtle pattern on top or save the patterns for the bottom. Short jackets that end at your waist. Double-breasted coats. Skinny belts can make your waist look bigger in comparison. Wear skinny pants with knee high boots to add volume. Front pleats/ruching on pants: you need flat front and styles that add volume to the sides of your hips and around your thighs.
