Making mini buns in your hair is a wonderful way to create heat-free waves or curls! Twisting your hair and coiling it into buns will set damp hair smoothly by the time it dries. It’s a great way to air dry hair and still have it look put-together and polished. You can make the buns after showering in the evening, then wake up to amazing wavy hair! Or, if you make neat little bantu knots you can even wear them as a cute hairstyle during the day. Keep scrolling to see our best tips on making waves with mini buns!

Mohawk mini buns:

Secure your hair in a mohawk of buns and sleep on them! Keep them in place with a couple bobby pins or scrunchies to reduce any ridges in the morning. It works wells to leave out a couple inches at the bottom of the hair so they don’t get too curly.

Mini buns around the head:

Try twirling sections of damp hair and winding each section into a coiled bun. Keep them in place with bobby pins and in the morning unravel them for gorgeous twists!

Bantu knots:

For an even more curly result, make little buns all over the head in a bantu knot style! You will have very bouncy and curly hair when you take them down. This is a fun hairstyle to wear while out during the day if you do them neatly!

Mini buns results:

how to create mini bun waves

  1. Start with freshly washed hair. After the shower, flip hair over and wrap it up in a microfiber hair towel and leave hair for a little while, or gently blot excess moisture from hair with a microfiber towel.

  2. Take hair down from wrapped towel when it is about half-dry, and comb through to detangle.

  3. Apply a hair product of your choice — mousse, wave spray, gel, leave-in conditioner, treatment oil, etc. — and comb through.

  4. Part hair, or don’t. We love how the results look with no specific part so that it creates random volume and texture!

  5. While hair is still slightly damp (not too wet or the buns won’t dry!), make sections and twist each section of hair before coiling it into a bun. Secure with a bobby pin or two, or scrunchies.

  6. Sleep on your buns or wear them during the day if you like.

  7. Once buns are dry, uncoil them and gently break up the curls with your fingers.

  8. Tousle with some beach spray and/or finish with hairspray.
